‘Will teach Pakistan how to behave as neighbour if support to terrorism continues…’: Army Chief’s fresh warning

Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi has issued a fresh warning to Pakistan. Speaking at the Chanakya Defence Dialogue in New Delhi on Monday, General Dwivedi referred to Operation Sindoor and said Pakistan had just seen a trailer. He said if Pakistan continues to promote terrorism, India will teach it how to behave as a neighbour.

It may be recalled that India and Pakistan were involved in a military conflict in May when the Indian armed forces retaliated for the April Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. The conflict ended after a ceasefire was agreed upon between the two nations.

“The movie hadn’t even begun, it was just a trailer. If Pakistan gives us an opportunity, we will teach them how a neighbour should behave,” Gen Dwivedi said.

The Army Chief underscored that blood and water cannot flow together, referring to the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty by New Delhi. The suspension of the treaty was one of the diplomatic and policy measures undertaken by India to respond to Pakistan’s continued support for terrorism.

“State-sponsored terrorism is a concern for India because we talk about progress and development. But we have made it clear what the new normal is – blood and water can’t flow together; talks and terror cannot go hand in hand. Those who promote terrorism, we will respond to them. Even if we have a ‘barren letter’, we know from where it comes,” the Army Chief said.

The Army Chief also reflected on the ties between India and China, stating that a lot of improvement has been achieved since last October, following dialogue between leaders of the two nations.

“India-China relations have improved significantly. Since October 2024, ties have improved as the political leaders of both countries have met. They underlined that it is in the interest of both nations to maintain normalcy at the LAC (Line of Actual Control). Both sides agreed to continue dialogues and constructively pursue the resolution of issues. The External Affairs Minister keeps meeting his counterparts, and the Defence Minister has conveyed to his Chinese counterpart that the ‘snow should melt’ now. The more we keep talking, the better the resolution we will achieve,” the Army Chief said.

“In the last one year, we have had 1,100 interactions with China at the ground level. Both sides have been flexible in holding dialogues. If they plan any construction, they inform us in advance; even after construction, if we raise any objection, they remove it. Disengagement has been completed at many locations. A Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) has been formed, headed by a Joint Secretary in the MEA with military personnel as members. They will guide us in finding a resolution to the boundary dispute,” he added.
